America's first pretzel bakery also offers one of the country's finest factory
tours. Sturgis Pretzel House, in Lititz, not only shows you how their famous pretzels
are made - but by the end, you'll twist your very own pretzel!
In 1850, baker Julius Sturgis offered a dinner to a passing hobo. In exchange,
the hobo gave Sturgis a pretzel recipe that proved so popular that Sturgis eventually
gave up baking anything else.
Your tour of Sturgis Pretzel House begins around a long wooden counter, where
you'll learn the art of rolling, stretching, and twisting dough into the appropriate
pretzel shape. From there, your creation goes into one of the old-time brick
ovens that line the back wall. Not only do you get to eat the results, but you'll
also come away with an Official Pretzel Twister's Certificate!
